Homeland Security Secretary Says Migrants on Temporary

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said Sunday that migrants currently living in the United States under temporary protected status should either begin the process of obtaining permanent legal residency or prepare to return to their home countries.

Speaking on CNN’s State of the Union, Mullin said the administration wants individuals on temporary protections to transition into a more permanent legal status if they intend to remain in the United States.

“Either try to fill out the paperwork and be here underneath a permanent status, or we’ll help you get back to your country,” Mullin said.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) allows eligible nationals from certain countries experiencing war, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions to live and work legally in the United States for a limited period. The status is temporary by design and does not automatically lead to permanent residency or citizenship.

Mullin’s comments come as the administration continues to emphasize immigration enforcement while encouraging those eligible to pursue permanent legal pathways if they wish to remain in the country long-term.
