Juvenile Suspects Flee Into Woods After Stolen Vehicle Pursuit Near Hammond

HAMMOND, La. — Two juveniles remain at large after a stolen vehicle pursuit ended in a crash north of Hammond on Saturday, according to the Hammond Police Department.

Police said officers initially attempted to stop a vehicle near Cherry Street and East Charles Street for excessive speed. Officers then learned the vehicle had been reported stolen through the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.

When officers attempted the traffic stop, police said the driver fled and intentionally rammed a Hammond Police Department patrol unit in an apparent attempt to escape.

Officers pursued the stolen vehicle northbound along North Cherry Street, also known as Louisiana Highway 1065.

The pursuit eventually ended when the vehicle crashed into a wooded area north of Louisiana Highway 442.

The driver and one passenger were taken into custody. Two additional occupants fled from the vehicle into the surrounding area and remained at large as of the department’s Saturday release.

Hammond Police said all four occupants have been identified as juveniles, including the two who escaped. Officers are continuing to search the area with assistance from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said appropriate charges and arrest warrants will be pursued as the investigation continues.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the remaining suspects is asked to contact the Hammond Police Department.
