Louisiana Bill Would Let Churches Remove Disruptive People Using Reasonable Force
A proposed Louisiana bill is moving forward that would give churches clearer authority to remove disruptive individuals from worship services and use reasonable force if necessary.
House Bill 294 is aimed at helping places of worship maintain order when someone refuses to leave after being asked.
Supporters say the measure is about protecting congregations and preventing intentional disruptions during religious services. Backers compare it to a homeowner removing someone who refuses to leave private property.
They also stress the bill does not expand the use of deadly force.
Critics, including civil rights advocates, argue the wording could be too broad and may lead to misuse or the removal of people who are not acting violently.
Some lawmakers also questioned how the law might apply outside regular services, such as on church grounds during events or gatherings.
The bill’s author says amendments were added to narrow the language and clarify when and where the law would apply.
House Bill 294 has passed committee and now moves to the Louisiana Senate for further debate.
