Louisiana Mayor Arrested, Accused of Stealing $75,000 in Medicaid Benefits
A Louisiana mayor has been arrested after the state attorney general announced charges tied to an alleged years-long Medicaid fraud scheme.
Winnsboro Mayor Alice Wallace was taken into custody and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. She now faces six counts of government benefits fraud.
According to Attorney General Liz Murrill, investigators believe Wallace illegally received roughly $75,000 in Medicaid benefits between 2021 and 2026 for herself and a dependent.
Authorities say Wallace failed to report major changes that would have affected eligibility, including household income, marital status, and access to health insurance through employment.
Investigators allege she continued using Medicaid benefits despite earning a salary that should have made her ineligible.
“It doesn’t matter who you are. If you defraud the hardworking taxpayers of Louisiana, you’re going to jail,” Murrill said in a statement.
The case was reportedly referred after concerns were raised by the Louisiana Department of Health. State investigators then secured an arrest warrant through the 19th Judicial District Court.
Wallace has served as mayor of Winnsboro since 2022. No bond had been set at the time of the report.
