Louisiana Senate Bill 371 Could Create Public Registry for Repeat Domestic Violence Offenders

Update: According to the Louisiana Legislature’s bill record, SB 371 was amended and sent back to the Senate Finance Committee on April 15 and did not advance further before the session adjourned June 1; it was not enacted. The amended version applied to people with three or more convictions.

A proposed Louisiana law is drawing attention across the state after advancing through the legislature. Senate Bill 371, authored by State Senator Mark Abraham, would create a public registry for individuals with repeat convictions for domestic violence-related offenses.

Supporters say the goal is simple: give the public access to information that could help protect potential victims and increase accountability for repeat offenders. If passed, Louisiana residents could search the registry much like other public offender databases.

Advocates for victims say repeat domestic violence cases often follow a pattern of escalating behavior, and public awareness may help people make safer decisions when entering relationships or allowing someone into their home.

Critics, however, are expected to raise concerns about privacy, rehabilitation, and how long names would remain on such a list after sentences are completed.

The bill has already moved through portions of the legislative process and remains under consideration. It has not yet become law.

If approved, Louisiana would join a growing national conversation about how states should handle repeat domestic violence offenders and what tools are appropriate to help prevent future abuse.
