Mississippi Juvenile Crime Law Set To Bring Major Changes Starting July 1
The Picayune Police Department is warning parents and teens about major changes coming to Mississippi’s juvenile justice system beginning July 1, 2026, under Senate Bill 2710.
According to the department, juveniles accused of certain violent crimes while possessing a firearm may no longer automatically begin their cases in youth court. Instead, those cases could fall under circuit court jurisdiction, potentially exposing minors to the adult criminal justice system and much harsher penalties.
The law applies to violent offenses outlined under Mississippi Code 97-3-2, including:
• Murder
• Aggravated Assault
• Manslaughter
• Kidnapping
• Robbery
• Drive By Shooting
• Shooting Into a Dwelling
Officials say juveniles charged under these circumstances could face adult felony charges, lengthy prison sentences, permanent criminal records, and long term impacts on employment, education, and future opportunities.
The Picayune Police Department said the goal is to increase awareness among parents and guardians, especially regarding peer pressure, social media disputes, gang involvement, and the growing presence of firearms in youth related crimes.
The new law is scheduled to take effect July 1, 2026.
