Mississippi NAACP Calls for ‘Urgency and Absolute Transparency’ in Ongoing Nolan Wells Death Investigation

The Mississippi State Conference of the NAACP is calling for a thorough, transparent, and urgent investigation into the death of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells, saying the organization is standing with his family as they continue searching for answers.

In a public statement, the NAACP extended its condolences to Wells’ family, friends, teammates, and the Ocean Springs community, describing Nolan as a kind, hardworking young man with a bright future. The organization emphasized that regardless of what investigators ultimately determine, Nolan “deserved to live a long, full life.”

The organization is urging law enforcement to conduct a full, fair, and transparent investigation while ensuring the public maintains confidence in the investigative process. The NAACP also encouraged anyone with firsthand information, photos, videos, or other evidence from Horn Island on July 4 to come forward and cooperate with investigators.

On Thursday, the Mississippi State Conference of the NAACP issued an expanded statement, saying it has been in direct contact with Nolan’s family and is demanding the investigation proceed with “urgency and absolute transparency.” The organization called on the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, along with all state and federal agencies involved, to aggressively pursue every lead without bias or delay. It is also requesting the release of investigative records, witness statements, video evidence, and autopsy findings as they become available, while encouraging anyone who was on or near the northwest tip of Horn Island on July 4 to share any information that could assist investigators.

The statement comes as the Wells family has retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who announced his legal team will conduct an independent review of the circumstances surrounding Nolan’s death and has requested an independent autopsy. The family has also asked for the release of investigative records as they seek answers about Nolan’s final hours.

Authorities have said they currently do not suspect foul play, but stress that the investigation remains active. Investigators continue reviewing witness statements, photos, videos, and other evidence from Horn Island, while autopsy and toxicology results remain pending.
