Mother Arrested After Toddler Hospitalized With Dangerous Blood Alcohol Level
A Baton Rouge mother has been arrested after her 14-month-old son was hospitalized with a blood alcohol content of 0.305%, a level considered life-threatening.
According to investigators, 27-year-old Genesis Harrell called 911 on May 18 after noticing her son was acting abnormally. She told authorities the child went limp after she picked him up following a nap. He was rushed to the hospital, where testing revealed he had severe alcohol intoxication.
Doctors diagnosed the toddler with alcohol intoxication, acute respiratory failure, hypoxia, and hypercapnia. Medical staff reportedly said that without immediate treatment, the child was at risk of respiratory arrest, brain injury, or death. He was placed on a ventilator and admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit.
Police said Harrell acknowledged there was alcohol inside the home but claimed it was stored where the child could not access it. Investigators said she was unable to explain how the toddler ingested enough alcohol to reach such a dangerously high blood alcohol level. When detectives later requested additional information about the incident, Harrell declined to answer further questions.
Following the investigation, Harrell was arrested on a charge of second-degree cruelty to juveniles. Authorities say the child has since been placed into state custody while the case continues.
