Multiple Powerful Earthquakes Strike Around the Globe Within Hours
A series of powerful earthquakes struck different parts of the world within roughly a 12-hour period on Wednesday, drawing attention from both scientists and the public.
Among the strongest quakes were a magnitude 7.5 and a 7.2 in Venezuela, a magnitude 6.9 off the coast of Japan, a magnitude 5.6 in Northern California, and a magnitude 5.4 near Papua New Guinea. Numerous smaller earthquakes were also recorded around the Pacific “Ring of Fire.”
While seeing several major earthquakes occur in such a short time can be alarming, experts say there is currently no evidence that these earthquakes are connected. They occurred on separate fault systems and are considered independent seismic events.
Even so, the cluster of significant earthquakes serves as a reminder of how active our planet is. Emergency officials continue to assess damage in the hardest-hit areas, particularly in Venezuela, where the strongest earthquakes caused widespread destruction.
