New Orleans Doctors Escorted From Diabetes Conference After Handing Out Anti-Trump Editorial

Five doctors and researchers were escorted from a national diabetes conference in New Orleans on Friday after distributing copies of an editorial critical of President Donald Trump.

The incident occurred at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center during the American Diabetes Association’s annual conference.

According to Louisiana State Police, troopers working security at the event were asked by conference organizers to assist in removing several individuals from the private conference. Authorities said those involved left peacefully and no arrests were made.

Conference organizers stated that the individuals were removed after engaging in behavior they said violated the event’s code of conduct. Organizers said the group was given an opportunity to stop the activity but declined to do so.

Several of the doctors involved argued that the removal amounted to suppression of criticism regarding the Trump administration’s handling of biomedical research funding and policy. The editorial being distributed had previously been published in a leading diabetes research journal and criticized recent changes affecting medical research programs.

The controversy drew national attention within the medical community and prompted debate over free expression, conference policies, and the role of politics in scientific organizations.

The American Diabetes Association conference is expected to continue through Monday in New Orleans.
