Nolan Wells Case: Attorney Says Bart Edmiston Jr.’s Family Preparing Defamation Lawsuits
OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. — Attorney Russell Latino announced that he has been retained by the family of Bart Edmiston Jr. to pursue legal action against individuals the family alleges have made false and defamatory statements about Edmiston online.
In a public statement, Latino said the family intends to file its first defamation lawsuit and plans to release a more formal statement. He also stated that Edmiston recently received what he described as a credible death threat, which he attributed to online speculation surrounding the case. According to Latino, federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies have been notified.
Latino said the family has hired a private investigative firm to identify individuals allegedly responsible for defamatory posts and warned that people who knowingly publish or share false information could face civil lawsuits. He asserted that using phrases such as “allegedly” or “people are reporting” does not shield someone from liability if they present false information as fact.
He emphasized that the family’s goal is not financial gain but protecting their reputation and safety while discouraging the spread of misinformation. Latino also said the family plans to respond to what it considers false claims methodically rather than immediately addressing each allegation publicly.
In his statement, Latino expressed sympathy for the family of Nolan Wells and said the Edmiston family also wants the truth surrounding Wells’ death. He argued that spreading unverified claims online does not honor Wells’ memory and instead moves the public further from the truth.
Latino concluded by saying the legal effort could expand significantly and invited attorneys who support what he described as the pursuit of truth and the rule of law to contact him privately to assist with the anticipated litigation.
