The New Orleans Pelicans are relocating their NBA G League affiliate to Kenner and giving the team a new identity as the Laketown Squadron, officials announced.
The team, currently known as the Birmingham Squadron, is expected to begin playing in Kenner starting with the 2026 2027 season. The relocated team will play its home games at the Pontchartrain Center, located in the Laketown area of Kenner.
City leaders say the move is expected to bring increased tourism, business activity, and entertainment to the area, turning Laketown into a more active destination.
The NBA G League serves as the official minor league for the NBA, helping develop young players, coaches, and staff. Every NBA team has an affiliated G League team, and the Pelicans’ squad has been based in Birmingham since 2021.
The relocation brings professional basketball closer to the New Orleans metro area and gives local fans easier access to games. Officials also see it as a long term investment in Kenner’s economy, with expectations of more visitors to the Laketown waterfront, increased traffic for local businesses, and a boost to the city’s visibility as an entertainment hub.
