Residency Challenge Filed Against Tracey Turgeau Powell’s Candidacy
A legal challenge has been filed questioning Tracey Turgeau Powell’s eligibility to run for Judge of the City Court of East St. Tammany, with the dispute centered on whether Powell meets the residency requirements for the office.
Powell officially qualified as a candidate for the November 3, 2026 election. Her Notice of Candidacy lists her domicile in Slidell, within East St. Tammany. Rabbit Hole reviewed the qualifying document but is withholding Powell’s residential address from publication.
The challenge essentially raises the question of whether the residence Powell listed when qualifying is actually her domicile for purposes of Louisiana election law.
That allegation, however, is not the same thing as a finding that Powell is ineligible.
Powell has longstanding ties to the Slidell area and has spent years serving the East St. Tammany community. According to her campaign, she has 21 years of legal experience and previously served as a Justice of the Peace. She has also served as a Code Enforcement Hearing Officer and is a Board Certified Family Law Specialist.
Powell’s campaign states that she has been a Slidell resident for 46 years.
Her history of public service in the area is also significant. Powell was elected three times as a Justice of the Peace and has continued to maintain her legal practice in Slidell.
The residency challenge will now have to stand on its evidence.
A lawsuit challenging someone’s candidacy does not, by itself, prove the allegations contained in that lawsuit. Powell qualified for the race and formally certified her eligibility when she submitted her candidacy paperwork.
The court will ultimately determine whether Powell satisfies the legal requirements to remain a candidate. The hearing is set for Friday, August 14th.
Until then, Powell remains a candidate for City Court Judge, and the challenge should be treated for what it currently is: a contested allegation awaiting a decision from the court.
The election is scheduled for November 3, 2026.
