Serious I-59 Crash Sends One Patient By Air Ambulance
A serious crash on I-59 southbound near mile marker 8.5, between the Mississippi state line and the Slidell area, brought traffic to a stop Saturday afternoon as emergency crews responded to multiple patients.
St. Tammany Fire Protection District No. 11 initially reported around 3:07 p.m. that crews were responding to a vehicle crash. By 3:20 p.m., firefighters described it as a significant crash involving multiple patients and said several ambulances and an air ambulance were responding.
In an update shortly before 4 p.m., Fire District 11 said one patient was being transported to a trauma center by air ambulance, while ground ambulances were transporting several other patients to a Northshore area hospital.
A wrecker was also called to the scene to begin removing the vehicles. Motorists traveling southbound toward Pearl River and Slidell were asked to avoid the area while crews worked the crash and cleared the roadway.
The identities of those involved and the extent of their injuries have not been released.
