Slidell Approves $3.4 Million Sale of Former Federal Complex to Textron Systems

SLIDELL, Louisiana — The Slidell City Council has unanimously approved the sale of the former Defense Information Systems Agency building on Gause Boulevard to Textron Systems Corp. for $3.4 million, a move city leaders say could reduce costs and bring major job growth to the area.

The 13.2-acre property, located near Gause and Robert boulevards, was originally donated to the city by the federal government in 1995. Textron has occupied portions of the site for years under a lease agreement.

City officials said the building had become costly to maintain, with more than $500,000 annually in upkeep expenses while much of the complex sat partially vacant.

Textron Says More Jobs Could Be Coming

Textron currently employs around 100 people locally, but company officials say that number could more than double if upcoming military contracts are secured.

One potential contract involving Marine Corps reconnaissance vehicles could create 100 or more additional jobs, with average salaries around $95,000 per year, according to the company.

Textron also said it remains in competition for a future Army vehicle program that could bring even more employment opportunities to Slidell.

Council Split on Sale Price

While the council approved the deal unanimously, some concerns were raised over whether the city sold the property too cheaply.

Councilman Bill Borchert publicly questioned the $3.4 million price tag, saying he had concerns taxpayers may not have received full value for the site.

Others on the council praised the move, calling it a financial win that removes a burden from city government while encouraging private investment.

More Money Planned for Slidell

Textron later announced it plans to invest $5.3 million into upgrades and expansion of the Gause Boulevard property, with construction expected to begin in mid-2026 and finish in 2027.

The company also said it will invest another $500,000 into its Stone Road facility in Slidell to support engineering and development for next-generation armored vehicle projects.

Why This Matters

The sale could become one of Slidell’s most significant economic development moves in years. If contracts are won and hiring expands, the city could gain high-paying jobs while eliminating a costly property from the public books.

What do you think about this decision? What should local officials do next?
