Special Election for St. Tammany Sheriff Appears to Be Taking Shape as November 2026 Vote Expected
The timeline for selecting St. Tammany Parish’s next sheriff is beginning to come into focus, although nothing has been officially finalized just yet.
Since Sheriff Randy Smith’s resignation, there has been widespread speculation about when voters would head to the polls to choose his successor. Rumors have ranged from a special election taking place later this year to sometime next year.
The St. Tammany Parish Council is meeting today to determine the official date of the special election. While the council has not yet taken its formal vote, multiple parish officials have indicated they expect the special election to be scheduled for November 2026.
If approved, voters would elect a sheriff to serve the remainder of Randy Smith’s unexpired term, allowing the winner to take office shortly afterward and complete the current term.
That would not be the end of the election process, however.
Louisiana’s regular election cycle would still require another sheriff’s race in October 2027, when voters would elect the sheriff for a new full four-year term. If no candidate receives a majority of the vote, a runoff election would follow under Louisiana election law.
At this time, the November 2026 special election has not been officially confirmed. The expected timeline will become official only after the Parish Council takes action during today’s meeting.
