St. Tammany Animal Shelter Issues Urgent Plea As Dog Population Exceeds Capacity
The St. Tammany Parish Department of Animal Services is making an urgent appeal for adopters and foster families as the shelter finds itself far beyond its intended capacity.
During a live video posted to Facebook, shelter officials said the facility is designed to house approximately 120 dogs. Currently, more than 200 dogs are being cared for at the shelter, with additional animals continuing to arrive.
According to the shelter, the overcrowding situation has reached a critical point. Officials warned that some of the shelter’s longest-term canine residents are now facing euthanasia after Monday if they are not adopted, rescued, or placed into foster homes.
Shelter staff are encouraging members of the community to consider fostering or adopting in an effort to free up kennel space and give the dogs a chance at finding permanent homes.
Officials emphasized that even temporary foster placements can make a significant difference by creating room for incoming animals and reducing overcrowding within the facility.
Anyone interested in fostering or adopting is encouraged to contact the St. Tammany Parish Department of Animal Services as soon as possible.
