STPSO Encouraging Safe Travel And Boating As Memorial Day Weekend Approaches

As Memorial Day weekend approaches and the unofficial start of summer begins, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to prioritize safety both on the roads and on local waterways.
Sheriff Randy Smith announced that the STPSO will once again participate in the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign during the holiday period. From May 19 through June 1, deputies will conduct increased seat belt enforcement patrols throughout neighborhoods and along local highways across St. Tammany Parish.
The additional enforcement efforts are funded through the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, which also helps support DWI enforcement and underage alcohol prevention initiatives throughout the year.
“Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, and we know many families will be traveling or spending time outdoors,” Sheriff Randy Smith said. “Our goal is simple; we want everyone to enjoy the holiday and make it home safely. Wearing your seat belt and making sure children are properly secured in age appropriate safety seats can save lives.”
Along with roadway enforcement, the STPSO Marine Division will also increase patrols on parish waterways throughout the holiday weekend. Deputies will monitor rivers, lakes and boating areas to encourage safe boating practices and ensure compliance with state and local regulations.
Officials are reminding boaters that impaired operation laws apply on the water just as they do on the road. Deputies will also be watching for violations involving no wake zones, lack of required safety equipment and reckless operation.
With boating activity expected to increase significantly during the holiday weekend, specially trained marine deputies and water rescue personnel will remain on patrol and prepared to respond to emergencies if needed.
“We want everyone to have fun this summer,” Sheriff Smith said. “But we also want everyone to be safe. Whether you’re driving across the parish or spending the day on the water, make smart choices, stay alert, wear your seat belt and never operate a vehicle or watercraft while impaired.”
