Picayune Child Sex Offender Gets Four Life Sentences, Each to Be Served Back-to-Back

A Pearl River County judge has imposed four consecutive life sentences on Daniel Joseph Chaplain III, convicted of sexually abusing a child, effectively ensuring he will never return to the community.

The sentence was handed down this week following a prosecution by the 15th Circuit Court District Attorney’s Office.

The investigation was led by Picayune Police Detective Rhonda Johnson, while Assistant District Attorneys Carpenter Marsalis and Christina Holcomb handled the prosecution under District Attorney Hal Kittrell.

Authorities said the victim was extremely young when the abuse began and initially lacked the ability to communicate what was happening. It was only as the child grew older and developed the words to describe the abuse that what had allegedly been happening for years came to light.

The case ultimately resulted in the defendant receiving four separate life sentences. Rather than allowing those sentences to run at the same time, the judge ordered them served consecutively.

Prosecutors described the case as involving particularly disturbing abuse and focused their remarks following sentencing on the child who survived it.

The District Attorney’s Office said the defendant exploited a child who was initially unable to speak about the abuse and emphasized that the sentencing finally gave the victim an opportunity to be heard and receive justice.

The case was investigated locally by the Picayune Police Department before being turned over for prosecution in Pearl River County.

With four consecutive life sentences now imposed, the defendant is expected to spend the remainder of his life behind bars.
