St. Tammany Parish Council Sets November Special Election for Sheriff

The St. Tammany Parish Council has officially voted to hold a special election in November to fill the sheriff’s office following the resignation of Randy Smith.

The resolution passed with a 12-0 vote, with one council member absent and one abstaining. Voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 3, to choose a sheriff to serve the remainder of Smith’s term.

Bret Ibert is currently serving as interim sheriff until the election is held.

While no candidates have officially qualified, several names have been mentioned as potential contenders, including former NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas, former NOPD officer Charles Loescher, retired DEA agent Chris Bell, and Slidell Interim Police Chief Daniel Seuzeneau, who has said he is strongly considering a run.
