STPSO to Increase Patrols on Roads and Waterways During Fourth of July Weekend

If you’re planning to celebrate Independence Day with family and friends, expect to see a larger law enforcement presence across St. Tammany Parish.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office announced it will have additional deputies on patrol from July 2 through July 6 as part of Louisiana’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. The statewide initiative is aimed at reducing impaired driving crashes and fatalities during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.

Sheriff Bret Ibert said the focus is preventing tragedy, not simply issuing citations.

Residents who plan to consume alcohol are encouraged to arrange for a designated driver, rideshare, or another safe way home before heading out to celebrate.

The Sheriff’s Office is also preparing for heavy traffic on local waterways. The STPSO Marine Division will have extra deputies and boats patrolling throughout the holiday weekend, watching for unsafe boating practices and impaired vessel operators.

Sheriff Ibert reminded boaters that operating a boat while impaired is just as illegal as driving a vehicle under the influence. Deputies will also be enforcing no-wake zones and checking to ensure vessels have the legally required life jackets and other safety equipment onboard.

Whether you’re spending the holiday on the road or on the water, the Sheriff’s Office is asking everyone to make responsible decisions so the Fourth of July is remembered for celebrations, not preventable tragedies.
