Multiple Tornadoes Tear Through Mississippi, Damaging More Than 1,000 Homes And Buildings

Multiple tornadoes tore through parts of Mississippi Wednesday night, leaving behind major destruction across several communities and damaging more than 1,000 homes and buildings according to early estimates from state officials.
Some of the hardest hit areas included Purvis, Brookhaven, Bogue Chitto, and parts of Lamar, Franklin, Lincoln, and Lawrence counties. Officials say at least 17 people were injured statewide during the storms, including multiple injuries reported at a mobile home park in Bogue Chitto.
Hundreds of structures were impacted in Franklin and Lincoln counties alone, with some residents reportedly trapped inside damaged homes as emergency crews worked through debris overnight. Interstate 55 southbound in Lincoln County was also shut down for hours due to debris covering the roadway.
In Purvis, members of Coaltown Baptist Church were preparing for service when the tornado moved into the area. The congregation reportedly sheltered together in a hallway behind the sanctuary while the storm tore apart parts of the church property. Everyone survived, though multiple buildings on the property suffered severe damage.
Roughly 20,000 customers were without power early Thursday morning as crews across the state continued damage assessments and recovery efforts.
At this time, no deaths have been officially confirmed from the storms.
