Mississippi Middle School Students Hailed as Heroes After Stopping Runaway Bus
A group of middle school students in Kiln, Mississippi, are being praised after taking quick action when their school bus driver suffered an asthma attack and lost consciousness while driving.
The bus had just left Hancock Middle School with around 40 students on board when driver Leah Taylor passed out behind the wheel. As the bus began to veer, 12-year-old Jackson Casnave rushed forward and grabbed the steering wheel. Another student, Darrius Clark, hit the brakes, helping bring the bus to a stop safely in the median.
Other students also jumped in to help. Kayleigh Clark called 911 while classmates Destiny Cornelius and McKenzy Finch assisted Taylor by giving her medication and supporting her until first responders arrived.
Taylor later said the students “saved my life and everybody else’s on that bus.” The school honored the students during a pep rally and plans to reward them with a celebratory lunch trip.
