Louisiana lawmakers have blocked a proposal that would have removed the state’s school requirement for the meningitis vaccine, keeping current immunization rules in place for students.

House Bill 737, filed by State Representative Beryl Amedee, failed in the House Education Committee on an 8 to 4 vote this week. The bill would not have banned the vaccine, but it would have ended the requirement that students show proof of meningitis vaccination for school entry.

Several Republican lawmakers joined Democrats in voting against the measure, showing bipartisan opposition. Supporters argued the bill was about parental choice and giving families more control over healthcare decisions.

Medical professionals and survivors of meningitis testified against the proposal, warning that the disease can become severe very quickly and that prevention remains the safest approach. One speaker described lasting complications after contracting meningitis in college before vaccine requirements were in place.

Because the bill failed in committee, it will not move forward this session, meaning Louisiana’s current meningitis vaccine requirement for students remains unchanged.
