Bicyclist Killed in Early Morning Hit and Run in St. Tammany

A 24 year old man was killed after being struck in a hit and run crash in St. Tammany Parish, and State Police are now searching for the driver responsible.

According to investigators, the crash happened around 12:30 a.m. on April 12 along LA Highway 40 at Blackwell Cemetery Road near Folsom. Authorities say Rodrigo Ornelas Jr. was riding his bicycle eastbound in a poorly lit area when he was hit by a vehicle traveling in the same direction.

The vehicle, described as a dark colored sedan or small SUV, left the scene immediately after the crash.

Ornelas Jr. suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

Investigators say the bicycle had reflectors but did not have lights. He was also not wearing a helmet at the time. A routine toxicology sample was taken as part of the ongoing investigation.

State Police are actively working to identify the driver and vehicle involved. Anyone with information is urged to contact Louisiana State Police Troop L or submit tips anonymously.

Authorities also remind bicyclists that Louisiana law requires proper lighting when riding at night and encourages riders to stay visible, especially in low light conditions.

All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
