Louisiana Man Sentenced to Prison and Surgical Castration in Child Sex Abuse Case

A man in North Louisiana has been sentenced to 45 years in prison along with surgical castration after pleading guilty to serious sexual offenses involving a child.
According to authorities, Zachary Dewayne Doolittle, 40, entered a guilty plea in Bossier Parish for aggravated crimes against nature involving a family member under the age of 13.
As part of his sentence, the court ordered surgical castration in addition to his prison term, a punishment allowed under Louisiana law for certain aggravated sexual offenses involving young children.
Louisiana passed this law in 2024, making it the first state to permit court ordered surgical castration for specific sex offenders. The law applies only in limited cases, including when the victim is under 13 years old, the crime qualifies as an aggravated sexual offense, and a medical expert determines the offender is suitable for the procedure.
The procedure is not automatically applied in every case and must go through both legal and medical review. If an offender refuses to comply with the court order, they can face additional prison time.
District Attorney Schuyler Marvin stated the case reflects a commitment to prosecuting offenders who harm children and protecting the community.
The law has sparked debate nationwide, with supporters arguing it serves as a strong deterrent, while critics raise concerns about ethics, human rights, and whether it constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.
