Northshore Renters Face Growing Affordability Squeeze

Renting on the Northshore, particularly in St. Tammany Parish, has become increasingly difficult for many residents as demand continues to outpace the supply of affordable units.

A growing number of renters in the area are considered cost burdened, meaning they spend a large share of their income on housing. The trend is no longer limited to lower income households, as middle income families are increasingly affected as well.

Much of the new construction in the area has focused on higher end units rather than the more affordable rentals many residents are looking for, widening the gap between supply and demand.

Local leaders and housing groups are exploring potential solutions, but rising land and construction costs continue to work against efforts to expand affordable housing options.

More people continue to move to the Northshore, but the supply of affordable places to live has not kept pace with that growth.
