St. Tammany Government To Regain Control Over Mosquito District After Law Repeal Passes
A state law that gave the St. Tammany Parish Mosquito Abatement District unique authority over its own operations and spending has officially been repealed, meaning parish government will now have greater oversight and control moving forward.
House Bill 286 passed unanimously through the Louisiana Legislature and removes special legal protections and powers that had been granted specifically to the mosquito district decades ago.
The push for repeal came after months of controversy, public criticism, and questions surrounding spending, accountability, and oversight within the district.
Supporters of the repeal argued that the mosquito district operated with too much independence from parish government and taxpayers. With the law now repealed, the parish government will have more authority over financial and operational matters tied to the district.
The mosquito district has maintained that its work is critical for controlling mosquitoes and preventing diseases such as West Nile virus across St. Tammany Parish.
The repeal officially takes effect August 1, 2026.
