ICE Officer Shoots Man In Austin, Victim Hospitalized

A man is hospitalized in serious but stable condition after being shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer Sunday afternoon in Austin, Texas.

The shooting happened on the north side of the city near the 7000 block of West Anderson Lane, close to U.S. 183 and Research Boulevard. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said the man was struck once in the torso and transported to a hospital for treatment.

Austin police officers were not involved in the federal operation or the shooting, according to Davis. The department’s special investigations unit responded to the scene as authorities began working to determine exactly what led to the gunfire.

Images from the scene showed a dark blue Toyota Corolla beneath an overpass with significant damage to the passenger side and what appeared to be bullet holes.

Austin City Council Member Mike Siegel said an ICE officer’s vehicle struck the man’s car before the officer exited the federal vehicle and fired multiple shots. That account has not yet been independently confirmed by federal authorities, and the Department of Homeland Security had not released a detailed account of the encounter Sunday afternoon.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said he wants the Austin Police Department involved in the investigation to provide an independent set of eyes rather than allowing ICE to investigate the shooting alone.

U.S. Rep. Greg Casar, whose district includes parts of Austin, also called for an independent investigation and the release of body camera footage from the incident.

The identity and nationality of the man who was shot have not been publicly released.

Questions also remain about what happened immediately before the shooting, why the man was approached by federal immigration officers and what prompted the officer to fire.

Authorities are continuing to investigate, and additional details are expected as evidence, body camera footage and statements from federal officials become available.
