Coroner Releases Cause of Death in Mall of Louisiana Shooting

The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office says 17-year-old Martha Odom died from a gunshot wound to the chest, and her death has been officially ruled a homicide. Odom was the student killed during Thursday’s mass shooting at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge.

Authorities say the shooting happened after a confrontation between two groups in the mall’s food court escalated into gunfire. Five other people were injured. A 17-year-old suspect has reportedly been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, while investigators continue searching for at least one additional suspect.

Odom was a senior at Ascension Episcopal School and was remembered by her school community as kind, bright, and full of life.
