Trial Date Set for Teens Accused in Death of St. Tammany Deputy

A judge has set a trial date for the three Slidell teenagers accused in the death of Grant Candies.

Michael Emanuel Lanier, Mason Paul Eugene Fischer, and Adrian Waughtal, all 17, appeared in court Monday morning. The three have pleaded not guilty to charges including second degree murder and obstruction of justice.

The judge scheduled the trial to begin on February 16, 2027.

Sgt. Candies was killed in March 2025 after being struck while deploying a spike strip to stop a fleeing vehicle during a high speed chase near Slidell. The case has drawn significant attention across St. Tammany Parish since the deputy’s death.

Sgt. Candies was a nine year veteran of the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office who joined the agency in 2016 after serving in the United States Marine Corps. Named the Sheriff’s Office 2023 Deputy of the Year, he was widely respected by fellow deputies as a mentor, leader, and dedicated public servant. His sacrifice and unwavering commitment to protecting this community will never be forgotten, and he remains deeply missed by his family, friends, fellow deputies, and the people of St. Tammany Parish.
