Covington Elementary Principal, Assistant Principal Arrested on Child Abuse Reporting Charges

Two administrators from E.E. Lyon Elementary School in Covington were arrested and later charged with failure to comply with Louisiana’s mandatory reporting law, according to the Covington Police Department.
According to booking records, principal Tonya Barth, 55, and assistant principal Lauryn Faciane were both arrested by the Covington Police Department and released the same day after posting bond. Faciane was booked on one count listed as “Child Abuse” and another listed as “Abuse of Children; Missing or Abused Children; Reports; Immunity,” with bond set at $5,000. Barth was booked on a charge listed as “Abuse of Children; Missing or Abused Children; Reports; Immunity,” also with bond set at $5,000.
Covington Police said Louisiana law requires school administrators and other mandatory reporters to promptly report suspected abuse, neglect, and other incidents involving children to the proper authorities. Because children are involved in the investigation, police said no additional details regarding what led to the charges would be released publicly at this time.
The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services, the Louisiana Department of Education, and the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education have reportedly been notified about the investigation.
All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
