DNA Helps Solve 40 Year Old Jefferson Parish Serial Rape Case

JEFFERSON PARISH, La. — A case that terrorized East Jefferson neighborhoods four decades ago has finally ended with a conviction after DNA and other evidence helped investigators identify the man responsible for a series of rapes committed in 1986.

A Jefferson Parish jury found 60 year old Donnell Bluain guilty on six counts of aggravated rape Thursday following a trial in the 24th Judicial District Court.

The jury reportedly deliberated for about 45 minutes before returning guilty verdicts on all six counts.

The crimes occurred between January and July of 1986 in Metairie and River Ridge, where authorities say women were attacked inside their own homes.

Investigators at the time believed they were searching for the same man because of similarities between the attacks. The suspect would enter homes, often through windows, and was armed with items including knives or screwdrivers during several of the assaults.

Despite an extensive investigation, the cases remained unsolved for decades.

That changed after the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit reopened the investigation in 2021.

Detectives located evidence that had been preserved from the original investigation and submitted it for modern DNA testing. In March 2023, testing produced a suspect DNA profile.

The profile was entered into the FBI’s national DNA database, and investigators received a match the following month.

The name connected to the DNA was Donnell Bluain.

Bluain was already serving a life sentence in Georgia for multiple rape convictions and other offenses.

Jefferson Parish investigators traveled to Georgia and obtained another DNA sample from Bluain. Authorities say additional testing confirmed the connection to the Louisiana cases.

Investigators also had another piece of evidence from one of the crime scenes: Bluain’s palm prints, which had been left on the edge of a bathtub.

A Jefferson Parish grand jury indicted Bluain in July 2025 on six counts of aggravated rape.

During his trial, Bluain denied committing the rapes and claimed law enforcement officials in Louisiana and Georgia had fabricated evidence against him. Jurors rejected that argument.

Bluain now faces six mandatory life sentences without the possibility of probation, parole or suspension of sentence.

His sentencing is scheduled for September 14.

The conviction closes a Jefferson Parish cold case that remained unresolved for approximately 40 years and demonstrates how evidence collected decades ago can take on new significance as forensic technology advances.
