Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill Indicted, Bond Set at $400,000

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has been indicted by an Orleans Parish grand jury on 16 felony counts, with a judge setting her bond at $400,000. As of Thursday evening, there has been no confirmation that Murrill has been arrested or booked into jail.

The indictment includes eight counts of public intimidation and eight counts of retaliation. The charges stem from letters Murrill sent to several New Orleans officials during an ongoing dispute over changes to the Orleans Parish Clerk of Court system.

The controversy began after a new state law eliminated the elected Orleans Parish Criminal District Court Clerk position and transferred its responsibilities to the Civil District Court Clerk. The legislation was approved shortly before Calvin Duncan, who won the election for the criminal clerk position, was set to take office.

Prosecutors allege the letters threatened elected officials with possible removal from office if they continued challenging the law, arguing the communications crossed the line into criminal intimidation and retaliation.

Murrill has denied any wrongdoing and is expected to contest the charges in court.

Following the indictment, Governor Jeff Landry criticized the prosecution, calling it politically motivated, and stated that he would pardon Murrill if she were ultimately convicted.

The case will now proceed through the Orleans Parish court system, where additional hearings are expected in the coming weeks.
