Louisiana Drivers Won’t Be Ticketed for Missing Inspection Stickers After June 30, Requirement Ends January 1

Louisiana’s long-standing vehicle inspection sticker program is on its way out, but drivers shouldn’t start peeling their stickers off just yet.

Under a newly signed law, Louisiana will begin a grace period on June 30, 2026, during which law enforcement will no longer issue citations for failing to display an inspection sticker. However, the inspection sticker requirement does not officially end until January 1, 2027.

The change eliminates the annual inspection sticker process for most personal vehicles across the state. In place of the current system, Louisiana will transition to a new registration-based system that includes a small fee and a QR code linked to vehicle information.

Supporters of the change argue that the inspection sticker program had become outdated and burdensome for drivers.

Not every vehicle will be exempt. Certain commercial vehicles, school buses, and other specialized vehicle categories will still be subject to inspection requirements. In addition, drivers in several parishes around the Baton Rouge area will continue to undergo emissions testing due to federal air quality regulations.

For most Louisiana drivers, however, the annual trip to get a brake tag is nearing its end.

The key dates to remember are June 30, 2026, when the grace period begins, and January 1, 2027, when the inspection sticker requirement officially comes to an end.
