Mike Cooper Vows To Veto Massive 800 Home Developments In Goodbee

St. Tammany Parish President Mike Cooper is putting his foot down on two major developments that could have brought approximately 800 new homes to the Goodbee area.

Cooper announced Monday that he will veto recent Parish Council decisions involving the proposed Isadora and Esperanza developments near LA 1077 and Ronald Reagan Highway, U.S. 190.

The developments have faced scrutiny since their rezoning requests first appeared before the Zoning Commission in May.

Cooper said he has reviewed the proposals and listened to concerns from residents before deciding the developments would put too much pressure on an area already struggling with infrastructure.

His biggest concerns include thousands of additional vehicles being added to already strained state highways, along with increased drainage concerns in a floodplain.

Cooper said St. Tammany can continue growing, but infrastructure needs to be able to handle that growth before hundreds of additional homes are approved.

“I support responsible growth, but it must be balanced with sufficient infrastructure and the needs of our residents,” Cooper said.

The announcement is a major win for residents who have been pushing back against high density development in areas where roads and drainage systems are already struggling to keep up.

Approximately 800 additional homes could have dramatically changed this part of western St. Tammany.

For now, Parish President Mike Cooper says that growth is not moving forward on his watch.
