JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — A Missouri Democratic state lawmaker was arrested just hours after winning reelection following allegations that he trespassed at an apartment complex, threatened residents and caused disturbances throughout the community.
Missouri State Representative Anthony Ealy Jr., 32, was taken into custody Wednesday night in Jefferson City after a series of incidents that reportedly began when he disrupted a funeral service.
According to a report by the Daily Mail, witnesses described Ealy behaving erratically and creating disturbances at several businesses before police were called to an apartment complex shortly before midnight.
Authorities said multiple witnesses reported seeing the lawmaker yelling in the streets, threatening bystanders and causing what they described as “chaos” outside local establishments.
The reported incidents occurred less than 24 hours after Ealy secured another term in the Missouri House of Representatives.
The Daily Mail reported that Ealy was allegedly experiencing a mental health crisis during the incidents. However, the circumstances surrounding his behavior and the events leading to his arrest remain subject to further investigation.
The arrest has drawn attention because of its timing, coming immediately after voters returned the Democratic lawmaker to office.
An arrest does not constitute a conviction, and the allegations against Ealy have not been proven in court.
