New Orleans Is Letting AI Answer Some 911 Calls

Artificial intelligence is officially entering the 911 system in New Orleans.

The Orleans Parish Communication District is using AI technology to handle certain incoming 911 calls involving traffic crashes when human call takers are already occupied.

The system is designed to recognize calls coming from near a crash that has already been reported and determine whether the caller is reporting the same incident or needs additional emergency assistance.

The goal is to reduce the flood of duplicate calls that can happen after a major wreck and keep human operators available for other emergencies.

But regardless of how limited the program starts, New Orleans has now crossed a line that would have sounded like science fiction not long ago.

You dial 911 during an emergency, and under certain circumstances, the voice answering you may not be human.

AI is already writing, driving, monitoring cameras and changing workplaces across the country.

Now it is answering 911 calls.

And this is probably only the beginning.
