The Living Wage for All Act, introduced by Rep. Delia Ramirez and other House Democrats, would raise the federal minimum wage to $25 an hour nationwide. Since Louisiana follows the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, the proposal would have a major impact across the state if it ever became law.
Supporters argue that wages have not kept up with the rising cost of groceries, rent, insurance, fuel, and everyday living expenses. They believe workers deserve pay that reflects today’s economy.
Others question what the long term effects would look like for businesses, prices, and jobs across Louisiana. Some economists warn that sharp increases in labor costs can lead to higher prices, fewer hours, staffing cuts, or increased automation in certain industries.
The proposal also raises questions about wage balance across the workforce. If entry-level pay were to rise substantially, many wonder how businesses would handle raises for employees already earning similar salaries in management, skilled trades, healthcare, and office positions.
Whether people support it or oppose it, the proposal is already generating strong reactions across the country.
