New Study Warns Parts of South Louisiana May Need Managed Retreat

Share your love

A major climate study is raising serious questions about the future of coastal Louisiana and especially New Orleans.

Researchers behind a new report published in Nature Sustainability claim parts of South Louisiana are reaching a “point of no return” due to a dangerous combination of rising sea levels, coastal erosion, land loss, sinking ground, and increasingly powerful storm threats.

The study argues leaders should begin discussing what’s called “managed retreat,” meaning the long term possibility of relocating some vulnerable communities before future disasters force it anyway.

Researchers warn that if current trends continue, some coastal areas could eventually become surrounded by open water before the end of the century.

The report also claims that while levees, pumps, and flood protection systems may buy Louisiana more time, they may not permanently solve the problem forever.

Louisiana continues spending billions on coastal restoration projects, levee systems, and hurricane protection upgrades.

Still, the report is sparking debate over whether Louisiana can realistically hold back the Gulf long term, how important South Louisiana is economically to the nation, and whether climate warnings are being exaggerated or ignored.

One thing almost everyone agrees on: Louisiana’s coastline is changing rapidly, and the conversation about the future of coastal communities is only getting louder.
