Orleans Parish Grand Jury Reportedly Investigating Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill

An Orleans Parish grand jury is reportedly investigating whether Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill committed a criminal offense related to letters she sent to New Orleans city leaders during a dispute over changes to the city’s court system.

According to WDSU, the investigation centers on letters Murrill sent to New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno, District Attorney Jason Williams, and several City Council members after the Legislature approved a law consolidating the city’s court clerk offices. In those letters, Murrill warned that attempts to circumvent the new law could place the officials’ own offices “in jeopardy” and could result in them forfeiting their positions.

Sources told WDSU that the grand jury is examining whether those communications could constitute criminal intimidation of public officials. District Attorney Jason Williams has reportedly recused himself from the matter, and a special prosecutor has been appointed to oversee the investigation.

Murrill has denied having any knowledge that she is the target of a grand jury investigation and said she has not been officially notified. She also stated that she does not discuss ongoing grand jury matters and would continue following that practice.

The reported investigation follows months of escalating legal and political conflict between Louisiana’s state government and New Orleans officials over judicial restructuring. The Louisiana Supreme Court ultimately sided with the state on the underlying court consolidation dispute, though legal challenges continue.
