Privacy Concerns Lead Family to Move Nolan Wells’ Funeral
The family of 18-year-old Nolan Wells has announced that his funeral will not be held at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum after all, despite the venue initially agreeing to host what was expected to be a large public service.
The Mississippi Coast Coliseum & Convention Center confirmed this week that, after meeting with Wells’ family, both sides agreed to move the services to a different location. Officials expressed their condolences and said they fully support the family’s decision.
The change comes as public interest in Wells’ death continues to grow across the Gulf Coast and nationwide.
According to the family, official funeral details will be released through their social media accounts and their legal team, asking the public to rely on those announcements rather than speculation.
The service is now expected to be held at Center Pointe Church in Ocean Springs on Monday, July 20. Reports indicate the Coast Coliseum estimated the cost of hosting the event at more than $82,000, citing expenses for security, staffing, traffic control, staging, audiovisual equipment, and cleanup. Coliseum officials said Mississippi law does not allow the publicly owned facility to waive or discount those costs.
Wells, an Ocean Springs graduate and Southwest Mississippi Community College football player, disappeared after a Fourth of July outing on Horn Island. His body was recovered two days later, and the circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation. Authorities have said they are continuing to gather evidence, while the family has retained attorney Ben Crump and commissioned an independent autopsy. A Jackson County grand jury is expected to review the findings once the investigation is complete.
As questions surrounding the case continue, investigators have urged anyone with information about Wells’ final hours to come forward. The investigation remains active, and no determination has been made regarding whether criminal charges will be filed.
