Raging Fire Destroys Slidell Home, Firefighter Injured Battling Flames

SLIDELL, La. — A Slidell home was destroyed Thursday after a massive fire ripped through the residence, sending flames into the air as firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control.

St. Tammany Fire Protection District No. 1 responded to the fire Thursday, September 3. Video from the scene showed intense flames consuming the home as crews battled the fire.

During the response, one firefighter suffered minor burns while fighting the blaze. The injuries were described as minor.

The home was ultimately destroyed by the fire.

Firefighter Injured During Response

Structure fires can become especially dangerous for firefighters as conditions inside and around a burning home change rapidly. In this case, one of the firefighters working the scene suffered burns while crews attempted to control the flames.

Despite the intensity of the fire, the firefighter’s injuries were reported as minor.

The fire adds to what has already been a busy stretch for first responders in the Slidell area.

Just days earlier, St. Tammany firefighters responded to an early morning fire at The Landing Bar and Grill in Slidell. That fire damaged the restaurant’s outdoor deck and patio area but was quickly contained and resulted in no reported injuries.

Then on Thursday, crews were called to a completely separate hazardous materials incident involving a FedEx truck near Gause Boulevard and Pearl Acres Drive. Firefighters determined that a chemical had spilled and begun reacting inside the truck. The department’s Hazmat Unit neutralized the substance, and no injuries were reported.

Home Lost To Flames

Unfortunately, Thursday’s residential fire had a much different outcome.

The intensity of the flames left the home destroyed despite the response from firefighters.

As of Friday, additional details surrounding the fire remained limited, including what caused the blaze and whether investigators have determined where inside the home it originated.

No cause should be assumed until fire investigators complete their work.

For the family affected, however, the damage is already devastating. A house fire can destroy in minutes what took a family years or decades to build, including personal belongings and items that simply cannot be replaced.

The incident also serves as another reminder of the risks local firefighters face every time they respond to a burning structure.
