Second Arrest Made In Madisonville Restaurant Attack Investigation
A second person has now been arrested in connection with the May 29 incident at a Madisonville restaurant that led to criminal charges against St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith.
Attorney General Liz Murrill announced Monday that agents with the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation arrested Gregory Jules Saurage following an ongoing investigation into the altercation.
According to investigators, Saurage was identified as a participant in the incident. Authorities allege that he identified the victim to Sheriff Randy Smith and believe he encouraged or incited the attack.
Saurage has been charged with one count of Principal to Second Degree Battery, a felony under Louisiana law.
Investigators say Saurage surrendered to Louisiana Bureau of Investigation agents at the St. Tammany Parish Jail at approximately 1:30 p.m. Monday.
The arrest comes just days after Sheriff Randy Smith was charged in connection with the same incident. Smith is currently facing charges of Second Degree Battery, Disturbing the Peace by Engaging in a Fistic Encounter, and Disturbing the Peace While Appearing in an Intoxicated Condition. He surrendered to authorities on June 4 and later bonded out.
The Attorney General’s Office says the investigation remains active and ongoing.
