St. Tammany Sheriff Randy Smith Turns Himself In Following Madisonville Incident
St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith turned himself in Thursday in connection with an alleged altercation involving a local resident at a Madisonville restaurant.
Smith was booked with second-degree battery, disturbing the peace by engaging in a fistic encounter, and disturbing the peace while appearing in an intoxicated condition.
According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office is handling the investigation to ensure an impartial review of the incident.
The alleged victim, Bobby Couvillion of Covington, says he suffered multiple lacerations and contusions during the encounter.
Couvillion says he was celebrating his birthday at Keith Young’s Restaurant in Madisonville when the incident occurred.
According to his account, Sheriff Smith approached him from behind, placed him in a chokehold, and began striking and kicking him. Couvillion was later transported to a hospital for treatment.
Couvillion has been a longtime public critic of Sheriff Smith through online posts and podcast appearances. While the two have exchanged criticism over the years, Couvillion maintains that he did not provoke any physical confrontation prior to the alleged attack.
The investigation remains ongoing.
