SpaceX Makes Starbase Louisiana Official, Bringing Starship Launches to the Gulf Coast

Louisiana is officially getting a SpaceX spaceport.

SpaceX announced Tuesday that it plans to build Starbase Louisiana in Vermilion Parish, expanding its massive Starship operation to the Louisiana Gulf Coast.

Construction is expected to begin in 2027, and SpaceX says the facility is being designed to eventually support thousands of Starship flights per year.

And this won’t simply be a launch pad.

Plans call for a massive self-sustaining complex with its own propellant production, power generation, deep-water shipping capabilities, vehicle processing facilities and even an airport.

The project is expected to be developed near Pecan Island, roughly 45 miles southwest of Lafayette.

The development could become one of the biggest economic projects to hit South Louisiana in decades, potentially bringing thousands of jobs and an entirely new aerospace industry to the region.

There are also concerns about what a project of this size could mean for coastal wetlands, wildlife, fishing, traffic and nearby communities.

But after months of rumors, one thing is finally official:

SpaceX is coming to Louisiana.
