All 16 Felony Charges Against Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill Dismissed

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill says all 16 felony charges filed against her have been dismissed after the special prosecutor moved to end the case Wednesday.

In a statement released shortly after the decision, Murrill called the prosecution baseless.

“This case should have NEVER been started because there was NO crime,” she wrote. “This outcome will not deter my efforts to get to the bottom of this. The irresponsible and illegal actions that led to this abuse of the criminal justice system need to never happen again.”

The charges stemmed from letters Murrill sent to New Orleans city officials during a dispute over legislation involving the consolidation of the Orleans Parish Civil and Criminal District Court clerk offices. A grand jury had indicted her on eight counts of malfeasance in office and eight counts of public intimidation.

The dismissal comes just one day after several New Orleans officials, including Mayor Helena Moreno, members of the City Council, and Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams, asked the special prosecutor to drop the case, arguing that continuing the prosecution was no longer in the public’s interest.

The case had already faced major legal obstacles. Earlier this month, the Louisiana Supreme Court halted the prosecution while legal challenges moved forward, and Murrill’s attorneys had begun seeking records related to the grand jury investigation, alleging significant irregularities in how the case was handled.

With the special prosecutor now dismissing all 16 counts, the criminal case against Louisiana’s attorney general has effectively come to an end.

Murrill said she plans to speak further later today, signaling she intends to continue pursuing answers about how the case was initiated in the first place.
