St. Tammany Parish Youth Pastor Arrested on Child Sex Abuse Charges Dating Back to 1990s
A youth pastor affiliated with a St. Tammany Parish church was arrested Friday in connection with allegations that he sexually abused multiple children during the 1990s.
According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, 72-year-old David Mercer was taken into custody Friday, July 10, and booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center as a fugitive while deputies assisted another law enforcement agency with the investigation.
Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit also assisted in executing a search warrant at a residence in Folsom owned by First Baptist Church of Folsom, where Mercer served as a youth pastor. The search was conducted at the request of the investigating agency.
Authorities said Mercer is accused of sexually abusing multiple children during the 1990s. The investigation remains active, and investigators believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward.
Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of Mercer, or who has information that could assist the investigation, is encouraged to contact the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office at (985) 898-2338 or their local law enforcement agency.
The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said it will continue working alongside its law enforcement partners as the investigation moves forward.
