Sheriff Randy Smith Retains Attorneys As Attorney General Investigation Continues

New details have emerged following allegations involving St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith at a Madisonville-area restaurant Friday afternoon.

According to a report published Saturday, attorneys representing Smith say the sheriff is cooperating with an investigation being conducted by Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill’s office.

New Orleans attorney Eric Hessler, who is representing Smith alongside Metairie attorney Jeff Hufft, said they are conducting their own review of the incident while cooperating with state investigators. Hessler declined further comment.

The investigation stems from allegations made by St. Tammany Parish resident Bobby Couvillion, who claims Smith assaulted him while he was seated at the bar inside Keith Young’s Steakhouse near Madisonville. Couvillion has alleged that Smith punched and kicked him during the encounter.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the restaurant Friday afternoon following a reported assault. According to St. Tammany Fire District No. 2, personnel evaluated one individual at the scene before transferring care to Acadian Ambulance.

As of Saturday afternoon, Sheriff Smith had not been charged in connection with the incident and remains in command of the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Suzanne Carboni said the agency cannot comment further because the matter is now under investigation by the Attorney General’s Office.

A spokesperson for Attorney General Liz Murrill’s office said there were no updates available Saturday. St. Tammany Parish District Attorney Collin Sims declined to comment.

Parish President Mike Cooper also declined to discuss the specifics of the incident, stating only that he has confidence the matter will be thoroughly examined.

Couvillion stated that he has filed reports with both Louisiana State Police and the Attorney General’s Office. State Police have deferred questions regarding the matter to the Attorney General’s Office.

The investigation remains ongoing.
