St. Tammany Voters To Decide New Sales Tax For Courts, Jail, District Attorney’s Office

St. Tammany voters will see a proposed 0.3% sales tax on the November ballot to help fund the courts, jail, and District Attorney’s Office. Parish leaders say it is needed to avoid major cuts.

A state audit shows the parish is spending more than it brings in. Officials say the options are to bring in more money, cut spending, or do both, and the current proposal focuses on bringing in more revenue.

Some residents have raised questions about whether existing funds are being managed efficiently before asking taxpayers for more, while parish leaders maintain the additional revenue is necessary to avoid cuts to public safety and the courts.

Voters will decide the measure in November.
